How to make Oat Milk

You can make oat cream at home using just two ingredients and one blender in five minutes. We’ll show you!

What is Oat milk?

The rolled oats are blended with water and strained, leaving behind the pulp. This is a creamy, easy-to-make oat milk!

How to make Oat Milk

Add 1 cup of rolled oats plus 4 cups of water into a blender and blend it on high for 30 to 45 seconds. For best results, strain the oat milk through a t-shirt.

Nut Milk Bags also let through too much pulp. We don’t recommend fine mesh strainers because they also allow too much pulp to pass through.

This method will yield creamy oats milk that is perfect for coffee, cereals, matcha, oats, and more.

Flavored Oat Milk

For added flavor, you can add sea salt, dates, vanilla extract, or cacao powder.

Oat milk FAQs

How can you make oat milk not slimy?

  • Blending for more than 30 seconds can result in a slimy texture.
  • Soaking oats will also increase their sliminess. Add to the blender and blend with water!
  • Heating oat milk can sometimes make it slimy. We don’t recommend this. Great news! Soon, we will have a recipe for oat milk that is inspired by Oatly Barista Milk and can be heated/frothed.
  • We suggest straining twice in order to remove excess starch that can give a slimy texture.
  • We suggest straining using a clean towel or t-shirt, as fine mesh strainers and nut milk bags let through too much pulp.

Do you have to use quick or steel-cut oats for oat milk? Our experience has shown that rolled oats work best. Steel-cut oats make milk that is less creamy because they are too raw. Moving oats is the best way to get a nice, creamy oat milk. Quick-cooking oats, on the other hand, are processed too finely and produce a slimmer oat milk.

Does oat milk contain gluten?
Some people are concerned that even oats without gluten can cause problems for celiacs and those with gluten intolerance. In our experience, certified oats are gluten-free.

How much time does oat milk last?
If you store it in a refrigerator tightly sealed, oat milk should last for about five days. If it starts to smell funny, you’ll know that it’s no longer good.

Why did my oat milk separate?
Separation occurs with many dairy-free milks, including oat. Shake well before using!

Ingredients

  • One cup of rolled oats (gluten-free if GF// or substitute steel-cut oats*).
  • Use less water if you want a thicker, creamier-looking milk!
  • One pinch of salt
  • One whole date pitted ( optional for sweetness // or one Tbsp (15ml) maple sugar)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • Use 2 Tbsp cacao or cocoa powder to make “chocolate Milk” ( optional).
  • 1/4 cup fresh berries for “berry milk” (optional)

Instructions

  • Add the oats and water to a blender. Cover the top with a lid or a towel so that it does not splash. Blend for 30 seconds to 1 minute or until the mixture appears well-combined. The medicine doesn’t need to be completely pulverized. Over-blending may make the oat milk slimy.
  • To test the sweetness and flavor, scoop out a small amount with a teaspoon. Add more dates if it isn’t sweet enough.
  • Pour the mixture into a large bowl or pitcher that is covered with a thin towel or clean T-shirt. It is best to double-strain the mixture through a fine towel in order to remove all oat residue. The nut milk bag let through too much rubble.
  • Transfer into a container with a lid and refrigerate. Keeps in the fridge for up to five days (sometimes even longer). Enjoy the cold after shaking well. Do not heat it, or the texture will become gelatinous. You can add it to granola, smoothies, and baked products.
